The holidays were a bit brighter for Oregon Guard and Reserve units in Iraq and Afghanistan, as Tualatin VFW Post 3452 was able to send them 433 telephone calling cards.

Each card cost $18 and was purchased through the military exchange system. These cards are the only items the exchange will sell to nonmilitary members. International calls from the Middle East to the United States can cost as much as $5 a minute.

Calling cards were sent to the Guard’s family support coordinators, who forwarded them to senior enlisted personnel in the Middle East for distribution.

Post commander Bill Phillips said his members are veterans who have all served overseas and understand how direct contact during the holidays with family members helps morale.
